Car Shopping with Pets in Mind

More pet owners are seeking out pet-friendly automobiles. LeaseTrader.com, an online car lease swap marketplace, says that they’ve seen a 67% increase in the number of customers who shop for a vehicle while thinking of their pets’ needs. That’s an increase from 24% from three years earlier. However, consumers are also moving toward a more budget-friendly form of transportation, often passing on large SUVs in favor of smaller cars still considered pet-friendly.

“Hatchbacks and station wagons are filling the needs of pet owners looking for a little extra sportiness and space to fit the family pet,” says Gina Spadafori, Executive Editor of petconnection.com and dogcars.com.
However, some pet owners still seek out somewhat larger autos. Just take a look at Honda’s new Element! Yes, that’s it pictured above. The Element’s new pet accommodation system features a rear ventilation fan, stowable ramp, spill-resistant water bowl and cargo area kennel, among other special features. The dog-friendly accessory package may be added to EX model Elements for dogs up to 80 pounds. I’ve always loved Honda, but now they’re even more cool in my book.
If you take your pet on the road with you, please keep in mind safety concerns. Pets, just like people, may get injured during car accidents. Even worse, the pets themselves, if unrestrained, can cause injury to their owners. Read more about safe pet travel.
