Here’s another great photo from one of my favorite contributors to the Flickr Travel Photo Daily group, Jessica.

During Queen Anne’s War in 1702, the fourth war between France and England, for ultimate control of the new world, British siege trenches came within a firing range of this point.

English ships blockaded the harbor and 500 soldiers and natives captured the town of St. Augustine, but not the Castillo.  The Castillo (or castle/fortress) offered the only safety in the area. Over 2,000 local inhabitants including 200 Spanish soldiers crowded into its protective walls. The siege lasted 50 days without the castle being taken.
