CBS Explores Teens and Type 2 Diabetes

Dr. Emily Senay

On the CBS television program The Early Show, medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay discussed the special concerns for teenagers with diabetes, a group whose numbers are rising in this country at a rate comparable to that of adults.

Dr. Senay reports that a survey published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine estimates that about 39,000 American teens suffer from type 2 diabetes, and a further estimated 2.5 million have pre-diabetes, or the inability to manage blood sugar levels that are above normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes.

For pre-diabetic teens, it is especially important to stress healthy lifestyle choices such as (say them with me, I know you can) good diet and regular exercise. As always, the best way to teach your kids healthy behaviors is to engage in them yourself.

Is it just me, or is Dr. Emily sort of hot?
