Today, April 24, is Arbor Day, a day begun in 1872 to encourage people to plant trees. Although it was started in Nebraska, the occasion is now marked in countries around the globe (not all countries celebrate Arbor Day on April 24). Below are a few facts about Arbor Day:

* Arbor Day was founded by J. Sterling Morton, a Michigan native who missed the forests and trees of his home state.
* Most states celebrate Arbor Day on the last Friday in April.
