With the rise in food costs, there has also been a rise in community gardening (and gardening in general). Corner Bakery Cafe is pairing up with community gardens across the nation to celebrate “Staying Local” this summer.

They’re offering a free “sweet treat” with the purchase of one of their signature BBLT sandwiches (which features locally grown tomatoes) to anyone who shares their “stay local” summer ideas, photos and videos on the Corner Bakery Cafe Facebook wall.

The next one is the Temple Community Garden in Washington DC.

The “Stay Local” program runs from July 1 to September 7. In addition to promoting local gardens by using locally grown tomatoes, a portion of the proceeds from every BBLT sandwich sold will go toward Corner Bakery Cafe’s newly established Community Garden Grant.

At the end of summer, the money will be donated to 15 designated community gardens in Corner Bakery Cafe neighborhoods. The community gardens can use the money for the tools they need to grow fresh vegetables, and build a sense of community and accomplishment.

My sister in law’s farm market has a saying – Know your farmer, know your food. In other words, you can get to know the person selling the food and know what their practices are, instead of hoping to get lucky with food that’s shipped in.
