Change Your Writing Tools

I was pleased to read on Holly Lisle’s blog yesterday that she found a quiet corner in a cafe and began a piece of fiction by writing longhand in a notebook. The experience left her feeling excited about writing again. Sometimes just something as simple as changing the tool you write with can alter your perspective enough to make the experience feel completely different. This freshens up your outlook and spurs creativity.

Try doing something just a bit different today. Use a different writing implement, write on different paper or in a different journal, use a new colour, or sit in a different place. Just write somewhere, somehow, with something and get your journal entry or story down.

Nice tip. Thanks for it. I use PC for my writing. Sometimes, I love to write with pen and paper.

  4. Hi Razib,
Yes, just the change can give you a new outlook. Thanks so much for your comment. ;-)

    Hi Heather,

    Great suggestion.

The same is true for reading - and some of our inspiration to write comes from what we read.

I just finished up a lovely novel this morning sitting in a new place and with different lighting.

The session was somehow more intense, more pleasurable … and more inspiring.

Ive found this works even on the computer. Instead of typing into a large blank scary Word doc, I type in an email field as a letter to a friend. Sometimes it helps unblock me.

  7. Hi Eileen,
sorry to get back to you so late. I’ve been overwhelmed with comments for our contest I kind of let your comment slip by without seeing who it was from. Your reading session sounds like it was very rewarding. Thanks for sharing with me. ;-)

  8. Hi Alianora,
Thanks for sharing that idea. I do believe we need to trick our brains that way sometimes, just so we can make things happen. Thanks for commenting, too. ;-)
