Check Pool and Spa Drains

If you or your child visits a public pool, there’s a good chance the owners haven’t complied with the law mandating anti-entrapment devices over drains. According to a recent CBS News report, half of all public pools in parks, hotels, schools and camps haven’t installed the devices to protect children and adults from getting trapped by the drains. The suction in these drains can be so powerful that adults can’t pull children away once they’re trapped.

If you see a flat, uncovered metal drain, you’re looking at a safety hazard. Before using a public pool or spa, ask if the facility has installed the anti-entrapment devices. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that you have your own pool inspected by a professional to check for entrapment hazards.
