Cheerios has announced that Shellie Braeuner’s The Great Dog Wash was named the Grand Prize winner in the Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories Children’s Book Contest. Braeuner won $5,000 in cash and the opportunity to have her book reviewed by Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.
Simon & Schuster has since offered Braeuner a book deal for her winning story. Robert Neubecker will illustrate The Great Dog Wash. Braeuner’s book will be launched in paperback form inside Cheerios boxes in spring 2009, and will be available in hardcover through booksellers in summer 2009.
Braeuner is a resident of Tennessee. She is currently working as a nanny for a family with four children; her idea for the book was inspired by was washing the family dog.
The first two stanzas of the book are:
Big dogs and small dogs,
Come one and all dogs.
We’re having a dog wash today!
Slippery slobbery,
Do a good jobbery.
Wash all that dog smell away.
