Chikuwa for real

My error was pointed out to me today.  When I wrote about chikuwa recently, I may well have used the wrong name.  In truth, this little sausage you see in the picture is chikuwa.  Hollow white and slightly chewy, it has a sort of grilled appearance down the middle that doesn’t look entirely genuine.

Tonight I ate it in Ramen soup and it went down very well.  My only problem now is what to call the other sausage that I called chikuwa in the last post?

  1. Chesu says:

The stuff in your previous post is a kind of kamaboko called naruto, named after the Naruto Whirlpool because it has that little red spiral going through it.

I don’t know WHY it has the little spiral in it, though… maybe, when it was originally produced, it was rolled? Maybe just to make it look more interesting?

  2. agreed says:

naruto is usually floated in some type of soup or laid across Chirashizushi (non-rolled sushi served in a bowl)
