Children with migraines have higher risk of sleep apnea and other disorders

There’s a conference going on right now called SLEEP. It’s the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS). They’ve been issuing many interesting press releases about abstracts (summaries of studies) regarding sleep issues.

One of these abstracts is from a study that found children with migraine headaches are more likely to have sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and lack of sleep, than children without a migraine.

According to the press release, Link between migraines and sleep disorders in children, “The study found the children with a migraine were twice as likely as the other children in the study to have OSA. A sleep-related breathing disorder (SRBD) was found in 56 percent of the children with a migraine versus 30 percent of the children with a non-migraine headache. A severe migraine was also associated with shorter total sleep time, longer total time to fall asleep, and shorter REM sleep.”

  1. I know how loopy occasional migranes make me - I cannot imagine a poor child having to deal with that. It is good to know that if a little one is having trouble with migranes what else to watch out for! Thanks!

  2. Hi Jennifer. I had migraines that started in my head when I was 13 - before that I had the abdominal migraines. They were awful. :-(
