China is denying that it has failed to report cases of human bird flu, insysting that “officials have quickly reported incidents”.
Reuters and AFP are both reporting on a story in the Asian Wall Street Journal on Thursday which quotes an anonymous source as saying that “local Chinese health officials have failed to report possible human cases to the central government and may be concealing suspected cases.”
It goes on the suggest that the actual death toll in China from avian flu could be higher than the reported 12.
China has reported a total of 18 cases of people infected with bird flu. The latest, just reported Saturday, is an 8 year old girl from Sichuan province who is hospitalized in critical condition.
Health Ministry spokesman Mao Qun’an is quoted as saying, “The release of the information has been timely, open and transparent. The report by U.S. media is wrong and untrue.”
