We’ve heard much about China the past year as it prepared for the summer Olympics.   Then they had the devastating earthquakes in southern China, far from Beijing, but still calling attention to this country in a sad way.  Yesterday, there was another earthquake.

China has long fascinated me, especially after I read books by Pearl Buck, who grew up in this country where her parents were missionaries.  She wrote for children and adults.

One of my favorite books was her autobiography.  After reading it, soon after I graduated from college, I wrote to Pearl Buck,  and she answered me!  For awhile we carried on a correspondence, and she encouraged in my aspirations to become a writer.
