Chinese New Year

February 7 begins a new year in the Chinese calendar and the start of the 15-day Chinese New Year celebration. In China and in Chinese communities all over the world, the day is marked with fireworks, traditional dragon dances, and meals with family and friends. Red is worn and used in decorations, symbolizing the warding off of evil spirits, and red packets of money are given to children and friends, an act that is said to bring good luck to the giver. This year is the “Year of the Rat” in Chinese astrology.
