Christmas in July: Yule Facts

We didn’t make up the concept of “Christmas in July” (although we’re having fun talking about Christmas things in the heat of summer). The people at Yule Tree Farms in Canby, Oregon remind us that the word “Yule,” often associated with Christmas, is actually a derivation of the Scandinavian word “jul,” which means “July.” They also shared a few other “Yule” facts:

  • The concept of Christmas in July stems from the feast day of Mary’s parents, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne on July 26.
  • Christmas in July marks the half-way point between Christmases
  • July is the seventh month and seven is an important number in Christian doctrine.

Yule Tree Farms are nurturing more than 6 million Christmas trees on 4000 acres, including the first-ever “designer” tree, Oregon’s “Noble Vintage.” In July, the trees are just about fully grown and waiting for the day they’ll be cut, shipped, and decorated for the holidays.
