Opened in 1908, Sonoma’s City Hall, located at the center of the town’s main plaza was build with four identical facades, so that it would not offend local merchants who’s businesses faced the plaza. So from any side of the square, business owners could claim that City Hall faced their business.
The original town, El Pueblo de Sonoma, began as the Mission San Francisco Solano and was founded by the Spanish in 1823. It was the northern most mission of 21 on the famous El Camino Real (Royal Road).
Sonoma is also considered the birthplace of California independence, when local citizens proclaimed independence from Mexico in 1846.
The hall is located at the corner of W. Napa and Broadway (Route 12) in the center of the plaza.
