Columbus Day in the United States

October 13 (2008) is Columbus Day in the United States. The holiday, celebrated on the second Monday in October, commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus and his party on the Caribbean island of Hispanola on October 12, 1492.
The first Columbus Day celebration took place in 1792, on the 300th anniversary on the landing. Since then, it has become an annual event and legal holiday. America’s Italian-American communities have also embraced the event and parades are held in “Little Italy” in New York, Cleveland, San Francisco, and other cities on Columbus Day.

I’m always glad to hear when some of the children can tell me a little about history. It was always my worst subject in school so I don’t remember a lot of what the teachers tried to share with me.
I always LOVED history!
my hubby and i watched an interesting program on pbs about columbus…
I didn’t realize that Columbus Day celoebrations have been around so long.
Just wondering why schools take this day off as a holiday.
I was a little sad and surprised today because on the way to school, I took the time to explain to me Kindergartener what Columbus Day is. I also mentioned to him that his teacher will probably talk about today. That night when I was asking him about his day, I found out that his teacher didn’t talk about it at all!
I’d like to win.
In my Italian neighborhood, Columbus Day is a huge celebration.
I know it’s a big deal in NYC
Oh how I love surprises! Thanks for the giveaway.
My Sons always teaching me different stuff about columbus and every other holiday that I either didn’t know or don’t remember from school as he’s always got some report or project he needs to do on them.
interesting
When we went to Jamaica, I was surprised by all the memorials and statues dedicated to him.
Man, I wish I got all of these holiday’s off of work! I need a government job =)
I am enjoying all of these surprises – I can’t wait until they are revealed!
1492!?! Whoa that was a long time ago! Thanks for the facts! (and the giveaway!)
I was born on columbus day.
Thanks for the brief history lesson. How quickly we forget!
When I was young we did not go to school on Columbus Day. My children had part of the week before off for ‘teacher in service’ but had to attend on Columbus Day. They no longer have Washington/Lincoln or other days like this off. Looking back I loved the week before a holiday like this because we would study facts and do really cool art projects. My children brought home NOTHING, sad how times have changed and I am really not that old!
Thank you for a little reminder of the history and for the chance to win. Happy Holidays to ALL.
People get Columbus day off? Not in TN.
Nice information! Thanks!
When I was a kid in elementary school, I loved all the Columbus Day history lessons and art projects we had prior to the Columbus Day holiday. Nowadays, nothing is said or done in honor of the holiday, and several people talk of Columbus in a negative way (Columbus bashing). Boy, have times changed.
Thanks for the giveaway! I had forgotten about Columbus Day til I realized the post office was closed!
Thank you for the great giveaway!

I know there is controversy with this holiday. It’s been hundreds of years. I wish those wounds would heal.
I had to work
OH man, I am Italian and I did not know this was an excuse to have a parade!
Thank you so much!
Columbus Day is a good day for Italian food. Hmmm but is there a bad day for Italian food? I don’t think so!
Please enter me into the contest. Thanks!
LOL! Had a discussion with my 11 year old who insisted that Columbus landed at Plymouth Rock. I couldn’t remember where he landed, but knew it wasn’t there. . . Now I know.
History is interesting…how very different it must have been back then!
Happy Belated Columbus Day to everyone.
