Comfort for the PWC

I am a big fan of the hot water bottle. I have more than a few lying around, waiting to be used. For me, hot water bottles are a god -send. They are the one constant (other than magic soup) that I turn to when I am feeling poorly. Whether I hug it, lay it on the pillow next to me, or rest my feet on it- the warmth makes me feel cozy…and the smell of the rubber makes me feel like I am camping (don’t have any idea why that is)- but its a nice feeling.
Anyway, this particular hot water bottle caught my eye, because its transparent – and the hearts float around. I think its adorable. I want one! If you are like me, and must have this – you can buy one here.

That is so cool! I use a hot water bottle every night to warm up my feet before I go to sleep, and to warm myself up whenever my metabolism decides to go on holiday. Since I my hot water bottle, this one would be perfect for me.
Oops, I meant: &lgt;heart&rgt;
Argh! Brain. Not. Working. Well, you know what I meant…
yeah, i know what you meant. I think its perfect for me too…unfortunately when I tried to purchase one earlier, I got an error message.
I think its because they didn’t recognize postal codes. I didnt read the site close enough, but maybe they don’t ship to Canada. Will read it a bit more closely…see if there is a way around this.
While I like the look of the “hottie” illustrated, I suspect it is made of plastic. This would be no good for me, as part of the comfort hot water bottles is the lovely smell of the warm rubber.
Hi Jill,
you are right! these bottles are made of thermoplastic material, which retains the heat longer than rubber.
these ones won’t smell rubbery….sorry. you can always pretend though. Although sense of smell is always difficult (if not impossible) to trick.
Like you. I love my hot water bottles. The trouble is, I get so attached to them I can’t bear to throw my old ones away when they need replacing. What do you do with your old bottles?
Jill,
sorry I am fairly new to the world of hot water bottles, having only discovered how fantastic they are a few years ago. So far, mine are all in good shape.
Surely you can recycle hot water bottles, can’t you? I would put it in my recycling box, and see if it gets hauled away. Perhaps – just to make sure it gets taken, put a few stacks of newspaper over it – so its hidden by other recyclables.
I will just put on my environmental scientist hat for a second and say that if it doesn’t have a recycling symbol on it, it can’t be recycled. Putting it in a recycling bin just means increasing the cost of recycling because someone will have to fish it out and send it to the dump. Even if it was recyclable but not on the list of items your municipality accepts, it would go to the dump.
I only have one hot water bottle, and the last one lasted me 14 years! That’s not much of a burden on the landfill.
Thanks Laura. I could have happily gone along with recycling, but from what Sylvia says, this clearly would not work. I thought it was only here in the UK that rubber was not recycled, but now I know otherwise.
Unlike Sylvia, my hot water bottles wear out much more quickly as they are in constant use. I have poor circulation and need them every night. To me they become “good friends“, and I think the rubbish bin seems such a sad end, and an awful waste!
Sylvia, you were just a little bit ahead of me…after I wrote that comment, I looked to see if they were recyclable. And out of the 3 I have, one of them is (which makes me wonder, what is in the materials of that one).
Jill,
don’t throw them out yet, maybe we can put our heads together, and come up with another use for used ones. Perhaps cut them up and use them as no slip guards for the bath tub or something. I will think on this.
I also use my hot water bottle every night. That last one I mentioned that lasted 14 years was actually a hand-me-down, and I used boiling water in it every night! Obviously it was well made. The brand was Fashy, if anyone wants to know.
Firstly, let me say, if this is a forum for women only, then I apologise for barging in! I came across it while surfing for ‘rubber hot water bottles’. I have had a love for rubber hot water bottles all my life. My earliest memories are of feeling my mothers warm silky soft smooth orangey-red rubber one against my bare skin at the age of 3 years! Now I have a huge collection of all sizes, styles, colours and textures. My favourites are the old soft smooth and strong smelling ones! Like Jill, I enjoy them as much more than just something to keep me warm. I would love to hear any comments Tim.
Tim I think there is a couple things you have to do. Number one is you should try to get involved with humans and not computer screens. Number two:if at all possible you should GET A LIFE.
Thank you, Daniel, for your well considered advice and encouragement. I find it truly inspiring to know that there are people like you, who care so much. I am greatly heartened by your warm welcome.
I’m with you, Tim, both in your original comments and your follow-up. Like you I am a male with a strong liking for hwb’s, and also like you, I have noticed that most of the discussions are on sites dominated by female topics, and feel a bit of an intruder. I wish there was a forum where there could be an open discussion of this subject by both sexes. I have therefore set up a blog page [http://hwbfans.blogspot.com where I would hope to attract some discussion. Take a look and see what you think.
