comforting crafts

bowl of stitched fabric yo-yos

I’ve been hit hard by a flu this week and really haven’t been up to doing anything more than flopping myself onto the couch, and drinking copious amounts of tea.  I’m hoping to be well enough tomorrow to keep on going with the book tutorial (believe me, I’m not safe with scissors right now LOL!)

I’ve been doing some thinking about the crafts that we pull out when we’re feeling sick, or tired, or just vulnerable.  Do I feel like starting a big, machine embroidered fiber art piece right now?  Oh my goodness, no!

What I do want is a craft that’s soothing.  For me, that means yo-yos.  I normally keep a ziploc bag of pre-cut circles in my studio (I usually go on a big yo-yo cutting binge once a year and cut out hundreds in a day)  I don’t need to worry about counting stitches, matching thread or being particularly accurate.  I can just relax and let my fingers do the work.

So what’s your soothing craft?  Does needlepoint soothe the savage beast?  Or do you prefer revving up the sewing machine?  Cross-stitch make you less cranky?

Let me know in the comments!

Hmm… I made a paperboard person from used groceries boxes, specifically a Twinnings box. It does involve scissors and keeping my cat away from the glue, but it was relaxing.

I need to get a photo up of it.

I came home with a thumping headache yesterday and couldn’t concentrate on anything, but I hate sitting and doing nothing. So it was out with the knitting needles and a straight forward knit pattern that didn’t require any thinking or really watching what I was doing

My soothing craft has been embroidery ever since I first started it. I love the possibility of it being so simple, or so very in depth.

I knit dishcloths, I can do them without thinking much, unless I want to try one with a pattern.

As for me, I crochet. Scarfs. I have quite a few now that I think about it. However it is simple and relaxing .

Aaaw Chloe, I’m sorry you’re feeling under the weather:-(

Like Miss 376, I hate sitting around doing nothing. I feel ten times worse just lying around thinking about how crummy I feel.

To take my mind off my discomfort, I do digital scrapbooking. I get so absorbed that the time melts away. To each her own :-)

Sorry you aren’t feeling so good. I actually really love to seed bead. I just find it relaxing, even though some people might not understand. I love the repetitive act of doing the same stitch over and over. I can zone out. Hope you get better real quick. ;-)

Knitting scarves and creating/decorating cards with puffy paint.

This article made me think. Thanks for sharing it. I am realizing how important creating is to me. I need to make time for it even when I need some comfort.
