Companies With No Layoffs

In this economy, layoffs are a hot topic. Many people I know have dealt with a layoff at some point in the last few years (including my own family.)
So that’s why this list of top companies who have NEVER had a layoff really caught my eye. I liked, for example, how the Nugget Market was able to cross train employees so that they could fill in for each other in various positions. This certainly helps guarantee job stability.
The strategy of Devon Energy was to cut costs to anticipate a changing economy. Again, a simple move and yet how many companies don’t do this? Too often business owners react slowly and by the time they make changes, it’s usually to do something drastic like layoffs.
Perhaps the most refreshing bit of news in this article was with the insurance company Afflac, which actively listens to their employees in order to avoid unnecessary costs and a downright spiral in sales.
I know layoffs sometimes happen because a particular industry is hit hard, but there are many other times when business owners and managers have simply not paid attention, and it is their employees who then suffer.
Does your company work to make sure employees are kept on staff? How are they doing it? What suggestions can we give companies that don’t seem to “get it”?
