Computer Maintenance Checklists

I’m not sure if I mentioned this before, but my laptop died about two weeks ago – lucky me huh? To answer your first question, why yes, it WAS a total nightmare. Secondly, in case you didn’t guess, yup, this is why I haven’t been around this week. I finally got a new laptop the other day, and although it’s not my old one (sniffle), it’s nice and fast, and I can work now – yay.
Thirdly, I figured this is as good a time as any to post some handy computer maintenance checklists. Some computer tasks are easy to forget and others you may not even know you need to do, but when it comes to an organized and smoothly running office, computer maintenance should be number one on your list. If you don’t have a checklist of computer tasks already that you follow, here are some helpful links… (PS, some of these have repeat points, but also original points, hence the inclusion).
- Computer Cleaning Checklist
- 26 Tips to Keep Your Computer Up and Functioning – this is a great resource that starts from day one.
- Computer Maintenance Checklist
- Preventative Computer Maintenance Checklist
- A nice video about cleaning your laptop – for the more visually inclined.
- And for the, “I’m almost out of hard drive space” worrying folks out there, try this calculator – totally fun, and makes you feel better.
Now take these lists, look them over, omit what doesn’t apply to your system, and then create a master checkoff list for your wall. Make sure to follow it – just making the list won’t help your computer to stay tidy and working. But you knew that right?
Got a site you love that breaks down computer maintenance? Let us know about it in the comments.

What kind of laptop did you get? And where? I’ve been shopping for one for a while and can’t quite commit yet!! help!
Well, I got a Fujitsu, because I didn’t want to spend more than $1000. I like it so far thought. They offer spill-proof keyboard, which is nice if you drink as much coffee as I do. However, I wasn’t expecting my laptop to die and since I work at home on the laptop, I had to get one ASAP – no shopping around. In about a year I’m getting a Lenovo which is my dream laptop – but they’re spendy.
Thanks for this information Jennifer. My son is doing an assignment for high school about this subject and this was a big help to him. It was also a big help to me as I don’t know very much about computers. Thanks for that.
@Shirley – you are welcome. I’ve had so many computer issues, I figured we should cover it
