It’s easy to attract butterflies to your garden in just a couple of small steps. Butterflies are fun to watch and assuming you already grow flowers this create a butterfly garden project is super cheap and easy.

Grow flowering plants: Butterflies like flowers more than plain old leafy plants or veggies. Even if you want a garden for food, make sure to plant some colorful flowers for your fluttery friends. Good flowers for attracting butterflies include butterfly bush (go figure), salvia, zinnias, aster, black-eyed susan, and more. See a big list of flowers that butterflies like. Note that the University of Kentucky says that, “Groups of the same plants will be easier for butterflies to see than singly planted flowers.”
Create a sunny spot: Butterflies like to sun themselves and it’s a snap to make a small watering oasis for them near the flowers you planted (see above).
- Simply dig a small hole (about 1 inch deep) and fill it with sand.
- Place flat stepping-like stones around the hole (light colored so they don’t get too hot).
- If you live in a rainy area you don’t need to do anything with your little oasis. If you have dry spells, pour a little water into the sand – keep the water level just below the sand’s surface. This allows your friends to take a drink.
Do you get butterfly visitors in your garden? I don’t, maybe because my patio garden is up high, but I do get hummingbirds which are fun too.

Helpful tips! I have recently added a butterfly bush to my perennials in hopes of attracting more butterflies. I didn’t realize I also needed an area for them to rest and hydrate.
Yeah, it’s funny that they like to chill just like us humans – add a pool and we lounge around too
