Creative Urge

Lately, I have wondered, “Why do I bother to create things?”  I mean, I am so busy, that it would be easy to just be busy, and not stop to make the odd tire sandal or bracelet.  So, what drives me to continue?

I think that, really, it comes down to easing the tension in my life.  If I didn’t pause to make the stuff I do, I think I’d end up crazy. (I am aware of the obvious idea that perhaps I create because I’m crazy, but I’m disregarding that, for now.)

Correct me, if I’m wrong, but there is definitely something about losing myself in a project that lets my mind slow down, while I use my hands.  I can’t say I get the same feeling while playing video games–though I have heard some people describe it this way.

I think the best this “create to get away” tactic has worked for me, was when I apprenticed with a blacksmith several years ago.  I tell you what, if it were feasible, I’d be a blacksmith over a librarian, college English teacher, yard care worker, or any other profession I’ve had!

What does it for you all?

The creative urge can also be tormenting… :/
When you come up with lots and lots of ideas, but don’t have enough time to make them… Or when you’re supposed to create something – and it’s so easy for you, ’cause it’s always been – and people have all these demands and you find yourself out of energy… But you still have the urge…

  2. I have to agree!!!

I seem to have many more ideas and nearly completed projects than I ever have completed projects.
