Here is a great online tool for you to bookmark. The Periodic Table of Visualization Methods has been assembled by a team of media, communications, and management specialists. It’s primary target seems to be business people and engineers! You can roll your mouse over the “elements” to see an example of each strategy.

It’s really a brilliant piece of work, and should probably be bookmarked by everybody for when you get stuck!

  1. That is interesting. i have seen a lot of these before, but didn’t know thay had names. Others i have never come across. There seems to be a lot a variations on a theme which are no more than a different layout and graphics. I think it would be useful if they had a blurb that would explain the merits of each option. Would be even better if there was a wizard which helped you choose the best method for solving a particular problem or communicating a particular idea.

Yes, you’re right…some of them are very similar to each other, but I think that one of the different layouts might appeal more to some than to others, so I don’t fault them for including all of them. It would be *great* to have a wizard to help choose among them. One thing I’ve always admired about Roger von Oech’s books is that he does just that: tells you some broad categories that his techniques fall into.

    Thanks for the comment Derek!
