Traveling with food-allergic children need not be so scary. Being adequately prepared is the key to less stress. In this last part of the series on “Traveling with food allergies”, let’s see how to safely travel by cruise ship when your children have allergies.
1. Book with a trusted travel agent. Cybercruises advices that having an agent that understands your health concerns will help you find the best cruise.
2. Get in touch with the Maitre’ D on boarding the ship. Make sure your children’s allergies are noted in the dining system and he knows where you are seated in the dining area. This is important in the third tip, as well.
3. Eat most of the meals in the main dining room, instead of buffet, so the dining staff can assist you better. Food at the buffet tables are also suspect for cross-contaminations, so it’s best to avoid them.
4. Repeat your child’s special needs to the ship’s staff as often as you can. According to Deliciousbaby, telling one person does not ensure your child’s health needs will be met. Don’t hesitate to tell the serving staff, the chef, the maitre’ d, and even the physician on board.
5. Use the other suggestions for land or air travel if your cruise includes other means of travel. And always bring the Epipen and other medications. A medic alert bracelet and chef card are also helpful.
