Dana-Thomas House in Springfield, IL

If you’re a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, you probably already know that the Dana-Thomas House in Springfield, IL is one to see. This house contains the largest collection of original (site-specific) glass, furniture and art. Or perhaps I should say “furniture art.” Wright meticulously planned everything, even the dining table and room chairs.

The 35-room house was Wright’s first commission in which he had total freedom. Built in 1902, the home was designed for socialite Susan Lawrence Dana. The Dana-Thomas House is the best preserved example of Wright’s early Prairie-style work.

I toured the house a few years ago, and my guide was extremely knowledgeable. There’s no picture taking inside, but you can stand outside and snap away at the exterior and gardens. Tours last about an hour with the last one starting at 3:45 on Wednesdays through Sundays.

Even if you aren’t particularly a Wright fan, you’ll still be amazed at the uniqueness of this house, built more than 100 years ago. It’s all in the details, and there are plenty of them in this home with 16 varying levels.

While you’re in Springfield, IL, also visit the Lincoln Home National Historic Site for a wonderful NPS Ranger-led tour of the house Lincoln lived in when he was elected President.
