Dating Rules Use Them or Lose Them?

Throughout the dating career of darned near everyone under the sun, armchair experts emerge with the best advice known to man – as if – it were original nonetheless.

Some rules you’ve heard time and again.  Now, with all the years of knowledge you’ve gathered in your own dating experiences, which of the rules below do you strongly abide by, encourage others to abide by and which ones do you think are entirely bogus and should be thrown out with yesterday’s bath water.

  1. Never date someone you work with
  2. Rebound relationships never last
  3. Don’t have sex until the third date or later
  4. Don’t date your friends ex
  5. Date only one person at a time
  6. Couples who are really in love spend all their free time together
  7. Always wait for the other person to say the “L” word first.
  8. Never call the day after your first date
  9. Don’t kiss on the first date
  10. Date at least a year before getting too serious

Which do you use and which do you lose?

  1. I kind of disagree with your article. I believe only in one rule – there are no rules. One just needs to follow their heart and the rest shall be taken care of. What say?

    1. Don’t date someone you work with–I tried it, it didn’t work out so well. It wasn’t disastrous, but it wasn’t a great idea and now I have to awkwardly see the guy all the time.
    2. The one I had didn’t, that’s all I have to go on. :)
    3. Probably a good idea, but I don’t think that having sex too soon will wreck a budding relationship if it’s right.
    4. Another good idea. I broke this one though and got a three year relationship out of it.
    5. Haha. Who cares until you’re exclusive? If there’s a front-runner though, you’re probably better off letting the ones that don’t measure up go–it’s not going to work out long term.
    6. False. They want to though! ;)
    7. A good idea.
    8. Whatever. If both parties are feeling it, that doesn’t matter. If one is not, then it’s not going to work out anyway and following or not following this rule isn’t going to change things.
    9. I generally don’t.
    10. I’m so breaking this rule right now! :)
