Deconstructing “DIET”

On a whim, I thought I’d deconstruct and rearrange the letters in “DIET” to see how many other words I could form.  Then, I related each to some aspect of eating disorders.

The results are intriguing (at least if you’re taking a break to read a blog…)

DIE – Unfortunately, many people with eating disorders die as a result of complications related to their conditions.

ED – The common abbreviation for “eating disorder”.

EDIT – Those with EDs tend to edit their thoughts and wishes so they can continue to restrict, binge, and/or purge.

ET – Stands for “extra terrestrial”.  Anorexics, bulimics, and binge eaters often feel like aliens trapped in their own skin.

I – Many people consider eating disordered individuals as “selfish”.  Though I don’t necessarily share this view, there is absolutely a sense of “I” (e.g., my wants, my needs) when it comes to ED thinking.

ID – Freud helped coin the terms Id, Ego and SuperEgo.  The ID is where the pleasure centers reputedly lie… and those pleasure centers can involve food.

IT – I’ve always felt that many anorexics and bulimics are looking for something… let’s call that something “It”.  Whether “It” is to be skinnier than anyone else or to have complete control over their bodies, “It” reigns surpreme.

TED – Okay, this one stumped me.  Maybe there’s a guy named Ted out there who could let me know what he has to do with EDs?

TIDE – It often feels like you’re being pulled by an uncontrollable riptide when you have an eating disorder.

TIED – For many people who care about (and for) eating disordered persons, the sensation they experience again and again is a feeling of their hands being tied.  They want to help, but they are repeatedly pushed away.

TIE – Eating disorders usually tie in to other problems, such as self-injurious behavior, obsessive compulsive behavior, and depression.
