Denis Leary calls autistic kids stupid and lazy

Conde Nast Media Group's Fifth Anniversary Of Fashion Rocks - Show

Do you remember stand-up comedian Denis Leary? He’s reviving his career with a new book titled Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid. At first glance, the title might make you think that it’s a humorous look at North America’s flailing work ethic, kids who are spoiled and want everything without working for it, that sort of thing. That could be an interesting book.

However, he takes a huge pot-shot at autistic children and their parents, and that has a lot of people up in arms. In one section of his book he writes:

There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can’t compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks… to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don’t give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you – yer kid is NOT autistic. He’s just stupid. Or lazy. Or both.

Wow. Really?

I can’t imagine how parents with kids on the spectrum must feel – I don’t, and I am so angry to read that. I know this is a man who made a career out of being offensively funny, but this is just offensive period – not funny.

I can’t wait to hear what Jenny McCarthy has to say since she’s been such a strong and outspoken voice in championing for understanding of autism.
