Developing Your Journal Language

I don’t know about you, but as I write in my journal over the years I find myself developing a personal and unique language. When it comes to writing about some topics, because they’re visited so often, I ended up creating my own shorthand ways of detailing them. I also create otherwise unknown words to describe emotions and other happenings in my journal.

This type of word play is useful when trying to recall details or when studying. Because writing so often in your journal means you do become familiar with the way you think and relate your inner conversation you may find developing your own methods for memorising facts comes quite naturally. The official word for this is mnemonics, though I find not all my memory helpers are so easy to share with other people. Different shapes and sounds in words or your own memories are strong triggers when it comes to developing your personal journal language.

I encourage you to write in a natural voice, as in, write the way you would speak to anyone, in particular someone you feel comfortable with. As you become more at ease writing you are adding to your personal vocabulary. This is where you can dig to discover your own ways to remember details and facts.
