Paul's remarks call for observing two major points: (1) early A.A.'s New
England Christian roots from the evangelists, rescue missions, YMCA, Young People's Christian Endeavor Society, and the Salvation Army embraced in the Christian training of Bill W. and Dr. Bob in their Congregational churches, Sunday schools, revivals, conversions, YMCA, and Academy experiences at
Burr and Burton and St. Johnsbury in Vermont. (2) the Christian fellowship derived from the foregoing and cofounded by Bill and Bob in 1935 in Akron. These points illustrate the role that God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the
Bible played in the founding and development of the Original program.
They are important for those Christians in the recovery arena who feel lost or intimidated when they hear secular talk about higher powers, nonsense gods, and universalism. A.A. today is not a Christian fellowship. But knowledge of its Christian roots enables the tens of thousands of Christians in recovery to pursue their beliefs freely while being tolerant of the different views they enounter in the rooms of today.

The message about the Christian origins, history, program, and successes of early A.A. is simply to point out how successful the results were when the early AAs relied on the power and love of God, His Son, and the truth of the Bible. God Bless, Dick B.

At the same time, there is no necessary connection between belief in Jesus as the Christ and religious experience. There are many accounts of profoundly life altering religious experiences and conversions outside Christianity - as I recall, James presents some in Varieties, including spontaneous experiences by atheists.
