Popular television host and personality, Dick Clark, shared with The Associated Press what it felt like to have a stroke. The 77-year-old suffered a serious stroke on December 6, 2004.

It was a complete surprise.

I woke up in the morning and my right side didn’t work. I thought a dog had slept on my side. My wife said, “I think you had a stroke,” and she drove me to the hospital.

Your life changes overnight.

I am happy that I’m alive, that I’m reasonably well. I’m sad that I’m impaired with my walking and my speech is impaired. But I’m happy.

Doesn’t he sound like a sweet man?

Mr. Clark is currently auctioning off some memorabilia from his time on American Bandstand. He will be donating most of the proceeds to the TJ Martell Foundation for the treatment of cancer and AIDS.
