Photomontage is defined by Wikepedia as “the process and result of making a composite photograph by cutting and joining a number of other photographs.” The effect of layering photos and images could also be known as collage or montage. This can also be done on your computer using general software for manipulating photographs.
While browsing I came across a tutorial by Lori from The Atelier Digital blog. The demo shows Lori’s technique for photomontage tutorial. This is really generous of her, so please take the time to read and perhaps leave a comment to let her know you enjoyed learning something from her.
I hope you find this useful for your visual journals. Please share any comments in the section below.

Hi Lori,
No worries. I was glad to pass on a good, simple tutorial for others to use. Thanks for creating it and for leaving a comment.
I went to Lori’s site. Awesome!
Digital montages are very useful for digital scrapbooking. One of my favorite techniques is using a piece of a photo as the focal point of the layout and creating a background image with the entire photo layered, blended and masked over a background paper. It’s really ethereal.
Hi Eileen,
I’m so glad you enjoyed the tutorial and Lori’s other work. It’s fun playing around with all these things. Thanks for leaving a comment.
I love mixing digital layers with scans of my physical backgrounds…satisfies both urges
Hi Cyndi,
That’s a great idea, too. I love finding all these cool ideas on how to come up with great images to use in journals. Thanks for leaving a comment.
I’ve got to learn more about digital photography and all the unique creations I could achieve with it.
Hi Mary Emma,
It’s so easy, but very intriguing. I hope you use some of the tutorials I’ve found online to get started. Thanks for leaving a message.
