DNA in a Pinch
In the event of a global bird flu pandemic, terrorist attack, or natural disaster, you should be stockpiling water, canned food, and medicine. But here’s how you can prepare for emergencies that might require DNA.
- Collect your family member’s DNA in case identification is needed. You can use a kit like the one from DNA LifePrint or prepare your own.
- If you are a victim of crime, find some way of getting the perp’s DNA. One woman scratched her mugger and collected enough DNA to ID him. Spit has been known to incriminate people too.
- Being stuck at home with bored kids qualifies as an emergency in my book, try setting up experiments involving genetics and DNA. You can visit websites, buy a kit, or extract DNA.
The b5media Science and Health Channel is helping YOU get prepared for emergencies. Tris at Homely Scientist has the round-up.
