DNA Sequence Worth More Than A Thousand Dollars
A couple of weeks ago, I asked in the Genetics and Health poll:
What’s the most you would pay to get your DNA sequenced?
A surprising number of you have deep pockets.
- Less than $100: 19% (4)
- $101-$250: 19% (4)
- $251-$500: 10% (2)
- $501-$750: 5% (1)
- $751-$1,000: 5% (1)
- More than $1,000: 43% (9)
Out of 21 votes, 9 voters would pay more than $1,000 to get their DNA sequence and only 4 were willing to pay less than $100. I’m in the $101-$250 range simply because of my budget limitations and also because I think I could persuade friends or family to pay that much for a gift for me.
Still, 63% were willing to pay more than me at over $250 to get their DNA sequenced.
I would have loved to know what everyone was hoping to get out of having their DNA sequenced excluding the novelty factor. But there definitely seems to be a future for companies looking to get into the personal, at-home DNA sequencing market. Yet another investigation for the GAO.
