Do you always start with cardstock?

A question was raised by a member of the scrapbook egroup that I belong to:
“In the few layouts I’ve done I liked starting with cardstock and then cutting patterned papers and arranging them on the cardstock. But so many of the postings I’ve looked at for inspiration don’t have any cardstock showing, only patterns. Is that because they are digital? Or do you start with some sort of cardstock and just cover it all? What do you use for cardstock if you cover it all – or how do you do it if you don’t use cardstock at all?”
Personally, I always start with a cardstock as the base because a cardstock is thicker and heavier than patterned papers and can therefore carry the weight of the photos and the embellishments I use. Patterned papers (and other times, other matching cardstocks) are normally used to accentuate the layout. However, if you plan to cover the entire layout with patterned paper, it is best to use a plain white cardstock or any kind of cardstock colour that you think you will not use in any other layout. This will save you from using your precious cardstock (especially Bazzill’s!) for another time.
There are other scrappers that I know who start with the patterned paper as a base but like I said, it is more practical to use the cardstock as a base because it could withhold the weight of the photos and embellishments used.

If I’m covering the whole thing with paper (or if I’m just gluing scraps of CS and PP) then I generally use the CS from page protectors.
HI Sarah — That’s a good idea. Unfortunately, the albums I have do not have CS from page protectors.
Hmmm… I’m trying not to think about what will happen when I run out of page protector CS. Go buy some cheap acid free stuff, I guess. The colour won’t matter, because it’ll all get covered, right?
Hi Sarah — The colour shouldn’t matter so just go ahead and buy the acid-free CS. Online or in your local scrapbook stores closest to you (if any), they normally have bargain bins where they sell cheap CS for almost nothing — usually they are the not-so-popular colours but if you’re going to cover them all up with patterned paper (PP) then the colour or texture (like Bazzill’s) shouldn’t matter.
i learned something new from your site. Kasi ako I dont really use my CS. I put my Lay Outs agad dun sa PP rather than CS. I’ll try to put my CS to good use and use it next time.
Hi Leirs — yes, it’s best to use the CS as base because it’s heavier
Glad you learned something new!
