Do You Have an Arts Studio?

I browse through books and magazines and gaze longingly at the lovely and efficient studios or workspaces other artists have. At one point in my life, I did have one room in our house devoted to my sewing and quiltmaking, along with part of it for a small shop. 169657_fabricHowever, generally I’ve shared quarters with other family members or took up a corner of a living or dining room.

My daughter has experienced the same situation in recent years in our multi-generational home. Now she’s looking forward to gaining the loft area for her sewing and quilting space as we juggle rooms around since her daughter has gone to college away from home.

I share an office/writing space with my husband. Sometimes I write at the dining table, but I’ve learned that writing can take place anywhere. But my quilting and fabric are has come to a standstill except for small projects because I simply don’t have the space.

What do you have a for a studio or work space? A room or your own? A small building of your own? Shared space with other family members?

I used to sew in our study room. So it was kind of shared with my husband. But we don’t normally use the room at the same time so it was totally fine. And there’s a built-in wardrobe in the room so it was perfect for storing my sewing supplies.

Then my husband’s neice came to stay with us so the study room is now her bedroom. I moved my sewing stuff downstairs. We have a big area downstairs which has a ping-pong table. It’s a fairly big area so even after I put in all my sewing supplies and equipments there was still plenty of room. Plus I can cut/lay out my fabric on the ping-pong table which is fantastic! I feel so lucky that I have so much space and such a supportive husband.

I have taken over the master bedroom as my studio, and it is crammed to the rafters with materials and “stuff” that I collect for my altered art.

The diningroom becomes my sewing space, I lay out foamboard that I have taped together to make a table protector when I am sewing, and can’t leave anything “OUT” because both of the cats LOVE to lay on my fabric…

We have talked about adding on a studio next to the garage, or tearing down the barn and putting up another building… my hubby does woodworking and has modified our huge garage for HIS workspace…
