When a woman has a chronic disease and finds out that she’s pregnant or wants to become pregnant, so many issues come up that it may seem frightening.
For diseases like lupus, it used to be that women were told not to have babies and if they did become pregnant, abortion was encouraged by physicians. There’s no doubt about it that women with lupus do have a higher rate of complications than do women who don’t have this disease, but according to this article, Lupus And Pregnancy, 25% of these pregnancies end up with a premature delivery of a normal baby, 50% end up with successful term pregnancies, and 25% end up with miscarriage or stillbirth.
Does pregnancy make lupus worse or increase the flare up? Not according to the article linked above. There are some issues regarding some of the medications taken by women with lupus, but this may be managed by discussing your pregnancy plans with your doctor.
