Do you have tendonitis? Do you take statins for cholesterol?

March 27, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN

Tendonitis and medications for cholesterol may seem to have no connection at all, but there have been reports of patients taking statins to lower their cholesterol and experiencing tendonitis (inflammation and irritation of the tendon) and even ruptured tendons.

According to a press release, “researchers identified 96 cases of tendon complications from the French Pharmacovigilance database between 1990 and 2005 that were attributed to statins. Tendon conditions included tendonitis and tendon rupture.”

The authors of the study, which appeared in the March issue of Arthritis Care & Research, suggested that “it is worth considering interrupting statin therapy before strenuous physical activity such as marathon running.”

You can read the full press release on EurekAlert: Tendon complications, though rare, linked to statins.

A year after taking Lipitor, I got tendonitus in my right Achilles. It still bothers me a year after receiving physical therapy. Two years after starting to take Lipitor, my left Achilles completely burst in a ski incident. The binding released as it should and subsequently checked out ok but the Achilles burst anyway. The Achilles has been reconnected and I hope to recover to ski again.

    Hello
I am taking statins for the last 8 years and it is now the fourth time having tendinitis.
My phisician insists that it is not because of the statins.
I am sure it is because of the statins.

I’ve had tendonitis in both elbows for almost two years. I thought I had injured them lifting weights. I had cortizone shots, physical therapy, and every cream and sauve recommended. Nothing helped. I read the article here about statins and immediately stopped all cholesterol meds. In just 10 days, my elbows are almost pain free. I’ve spent thousands of dollars and have been in pain for two years. THANK YOU!!!
