Do You Listen to Music While You Quilt?

Some people like to work with total quiet; others enjoy music as they quilt or create fabric art. Then there are those who can work midst total confusion and family activities, perhaps with music to drown out distractions.
Music while you work usually creates an uplifting atmosphere. Do you listen to music for relaxation, to help you concentrate, drown out distracting sounds, or simply because you enjoy it?
Yvonne Russell set me thinking on this topic…music while you work, when I read her post, Whistle While You Write…7 Songs Meme, at Grow Your Writing Business blog. Although Yvonne didn’t tag anyone for the meme, she invited readers to share their thoughts on music while working.
I prefer quiet music, relaxing music, yet something with an upbeat tempo. There are some nostalgic songs from my youth that appeal, like The Twelfth of Never, which I listened to at the dentist’s the other day. This resulted in a pleasant conversation about music with the dental hygenist (as much as I could talk while she worked).
I discovered Native American flute music when Jim and I visited Sedona, AZ. Music from the Civil War era fascinates me. I can visualize the ladies making quilts to send to the soldiers while softly singing some of these songs. Yanni’s songs are others I find enjoyable.
My daughter has a CD of lovely quilting songs by Cathy Miller. One of hers is One Stitch at a Time that we often play.
Think about it… What type of music do you like to listen to when you’re working? Or do you prefer quiet?
I won’t tag anyone either, for a meme, but would find it interesting if you’d share the music you enjoy.

It really depends what mood I’m in
I listen to everything from electronica, to jazz, to classical when I’m working. I try and use headphones so I don’t disturb my fiance!
I didn’t know there were quilting songs. I do enjoy reading the Elm Creek Quilts fiction series, though.
I have very eclectic tastes in everything. I love opera, light rock, alternative, jazz, blues and more. As long as it’s not hard acid rock or rap I’m ok with it.

Chloe, thanks for sharing the type of music you enjoy while you’re working. Yes, headphones would be a help…so your music won’t disturb others or noise in the room won’t distract from your music and work.
Yvonne, glad you made it to visit Qulting and Patchwork. Yes, Cathy Miller’s quilting songs are lovely…some remind me of early folk songs. And my daughter and I love the Elm Creek Quilters series. Do you know her latest one was released in April? I let my library know (they have the series) and they have me first on the list when they get it in. Soon, I hope. Jennifer’s books have inspired me to pull together information about my quilting heritage that spans several generations.
Definitely peace and quiet. Music? No thanks.
Thanks, Adrienne, for sharing your thoughts. Although I enjoy soft background music while I quilt or write, I frequently work without any because I get so busy I forget to turn it on.
I never knew they had quilt music either, until our last quilt guild meeting. We had our annual pot luck lunch, one of the ladies brought in her CD player and had Cathy Miller playing. I’II have to purchase her music it was nice listening to her
I’m so pleased you’ve discovered Cathy Miller’s music. I’ve also begun to delve into some of the quilts and quilters she sings about.
