Doctors and Treatment of Diabetics

There are some medical professionals that love to talk about diabetic amputations when meeting with a newly diagnosed Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetic. As a diabetic myself, I think this is the equivalent of taunting.

I caught this article where one medical professional choose to do just that. There is something about hauling out a sick story of amputation that smacks of arrogance. Medical professionals may believe that diabetics don’t pay attention or don’t care about their bodies, but I can assure you that is not the case. Moreover, many of us feel that it is the medical professionals who don’t care.

Rather than talk about an amputation horror story as a way to say “manage your blood sugars,” how about doing some real education? How about making sure the patient truly understands the difference between carbs and protein? How about making sure diabetics feel empowered to manage their disease, rather than try and scare them into it.
