Doctors Trained in Clinical Genetics Needed

The American College of Medical Genetics has noted the decline in number of medical students choosing clinical genetics as a career. Clinical geneticists are needed to:

  • Consult with patients and their families on diseases or symptoms that may have roots in a gene defect or DNA mutations.
  • Order gene-based tests.
  • Oversee lab work.
  • Work in a research lab.
  • Explain genetic test results to patients.
  • Consult with doctors who treat pediatric, obstetric, cancer and other kinds of patients.

Dr. Bruce Korf, chairman of University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Genetics:

The expertise is needed. If I’m a clinical manager, I want to know that all my physicians and health care providers know about new tests, new treatments and who to rely on when a genomics issue comes up.

From what I’ve seen, doctors often don’t believe genetic tests are advanced enough to be incorporated into the care of most diseases. In addition, some believe that it’s too costly and troublesome. Hopefully, as the genomic revolution develops more diagnostic tests and personalized medicine, doctors will be eager to learn about genetics.

  2. Richa: I recommend you talk to the professors in your department and ask for the contact info of former graduates. That will be your best gauge of what to expect upon graduation. Best of luck!
