Does being a step parent make you any less of a “working parent”?

Lylah M. Alphonse brought up a working parent aspect I hadn’t thought of: does being a stepmother make you “any less” of a working mother?

I’ve never been a step parent, but I do know enough to be shocked when she wrote about people assuming she had all kinds of time to work extra since she wasn’t “really a parent”.

Everyone’s situation is different, I’m sure, but if you’re married to someone who brought young kids into the marriage, then you are parenting them. Your schedule may be different from someone else’s if the kids aren’t with you full time, but the responsibilities are still there.

Have you had the experience of being treated as “less of a working parent” because you are a step parent?

  1. Hi Elizabeth,

I love your blog and read it regularly. I often link to it on my blog. I particularly like this post and referred to it on my blog today. Keep up the good work.
