Dog vs. Cat People

cat-and-dog.jpgThe American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) surveys pet owners every five years to come up with the U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographic Sourcebook.

The 2007 version of the sourcebook revealed some interesting findings.

67% of dog owners are married, while just 61.8% of cat owners are hitched. 52.6% of dog owners have families of three or more, and only 47% of cat owners have families that large.

Sad news: Only 63.7% of cat owners made a least one annual vet visit, compared to 82.7% of dog owners.

But are there more pet cats or more pet dogs?

There are actually fewer cat owners, but more cats!

Seems cat folk are more likely to have more than one cat. There are nearly 82 million pet cats in the US, compared to around 72 million pet dogs. Yet, there are 43 million dog owners and only 37.5 million cat owners.

Do any of these findings surprise you?
