Dolch Sight Words
The Dolch words are the 220 most frequently found words.
The Dolch high frequency list was published by Edward William Dolch, Ph.D. in his book, Problems in Reading. It consists of 220 words, excluding nouns.
The reading of this list does not make a learner a reader but solidifies that a reader knows sight words and is often used as a testing tool.
Because the words are “service” words (pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and verbs) they can’t all be learned through the used of pictures and must be memorized with activities like flashcards and word walls. Additionally, because they are commonly one syllable words they can’t be “sounded out” using syllables.
Jan Brett offers great lists with pictures as well as flashcards to help learn the sight words. She also has free word charts.

This is really interesting to me since my oldest daughter is studying linguistics!
I love Jan Brett’s illustrations! Going to check them out.
I never heard of this. Now that my son is getting into reading more (he’s in K) I’ll have to make sure he knows those words. Thanks!
I have always enjoyed Jan Brett’s books, illustrations and her web site. Teachers in my school use her books in their classes.
