Don’t forget: Tax Free Weekend

People all over the country were hitting the stores early Saturday morning, lines from here to Timbuktu. Why? One answer…the tax free school weekend. For those that actually do not know this is when many, if not all, stores decided to take the tax on any school related items.

Items such as: anything electronic (computers, laptops, printers, calculators, etc), school supplies (you know everything on that teacher’s list), lunch boxes, bikes, locks and of course….clothes.

Now for some this isn’t much of a break so they hit the stores in previous weeks and others are waiting for those last minute deals when things are going to be on sale for next to nothing. I must admit when we drove by Old Navy and saw that they had shirts that were 3 for $10 we had to stop and look. It was CRAZY! I won’t be going anywhere on a tax free weekend, ever again. If you are going out, try to have a bit of patience.

Did you shop around this weekend? If not there is still one more day to get in on these deals.

We shopped this tax free weekend. We bought a computer, some clothes for myself and a new car seat for my preschooler. I was disappointed because while it was advertised everywhere as TAX FREE WEEKEND…it was only state sales tax free, all purchases still included city and parish (we live in Louisiana – think County) taxes. The sales tax went from being 8% in our city to 4%. Not a very substantial savings. I think we saved about $25 on the computer, $2 on the clothes and another $3 on the car seat. It was enough to pay for gas and lunch during the excursion.

also, it was a bit more crowded than usual, but nothing major. NOTHING like Black Friday.

Tax-free weekend isn’t until August 21-23 in Texas. So we still have a few weeks to wait. I don’t normally shop on that weekend because of the crowds.
