Drama as an Art Form

Community theatre, high school performances, even family plays give would-be actors an opportunity to experience the performing arts.

Today I watched high school students practice a Shakespearian play for their English class.

Lisening to these young people perfect their performance was entertaining and enlightening.  One of the students directed although their absent teacher, for whom I was subbing, would have input when she returned.

These performances in school often give students confidence and pull out talent they might never realize otherwise.  They may never go on to professional acting, but there can be enjoyment in performing for smaller audiences throughout their lives.

In addition to acting, which we most commonly associate with plays, students can learn lighting, stage design, costuming and directing.  My granddaughter became a lighting expert during  middle school and high school.  She now does the lighting for college theater.

One of her teachers commented, when he learned of her current achievements, “She can do this throughout life in community theater after college.”

Does theater appeal to you as an art form as a place where you can gain confidence, explore creativity, and have fun?
