Dye Your Hair with Kool Aid

Ash had left a comment asking how to dye hair with Kool Aid.  It can be done but you better want to make sure that you want it done.  You may end up with Great Bluedini (do they still make that?) color for a very long time.

First, if you have dark hair you will need to bleach it.  Don’t do this without talking to your mom or dad first.

Decide if you want all blue hair, streaks of blue, green and pink, or whatever.  If you have to bleach you will need a kit from the beauty supply place.  It will be best if you have someone to help you.  Read the instructions carefully before bleaching and follow them exactly.  Do not use any conditioner, even the one that comes with the bleach kit because it will seal the hair shaft and your hair won’t take color.

Mix three packets of UNSWEETENED Kool Aid, the kind with no sugar and no artificial sweeteners, with a tablespoon of your conditioner.  Mix until well blended and then spread on your hair.  Your hair should be damp when this is done.

Wrap with plastic wrap and then an old towel and leave on for the whole day, at least 6 hours.  Rinse it when you are ready and dry normally.

The dye will fade over the next few months but if you have bleached your hair, or have blond hair it will not come out totally.

If you have dark hair it will give a highlight of the color that you use but will not be all that noticeable.

Basically, be sure you want to live with it for a long time!

I have chestnut brown hair and never had to bleach my hair prior to using Kool Aid.
I simply poured boiling water into a cup, added the color appropriate powder (red was my poison), and dipped strands of hair in for a minute or so. That was it.

The color was very vibrant for a month or so, then turned puke orange, then a dead yellow color. I dyed my hair several times with “real” box dyes, but those strands of hair never took any color after the boiling water.

Thanks Rachel! I should tell my daughter.

I think it may depend on your hair – I tried several times to dye my hair with Kool-Aid and nada! I now use bleach and Special FX – which turns out beautifully :-)
