Eco-Friendly Home Aquarium Tips

Heads up, I don’t know if you remember, but in the post, Sustainable Fish Care & Green Tanks I noted that I was having trouble finding any good tips on eco-friendly home fish tanks. Well, in happy related news, I just read a great piece at the Washington Post that’s full of eco-friendly home aquarium tips.

The piece has some ideas I didn’t think of and a nice part of this piece looks at how much energy your tank may be using related to size. The piece also digs way deeper into sustainable fish choices for your home aquarium. This is something I don’t know much about, or, well didn’t until I read the piece.

So, if you’re a fishy lover and want to also love on the planet, read the whole piece – For an Eco-Friendly Home Aquarium, Keep It Small and Track Your Fish.

The article encourages getting smaller fish tanks, and that’s fine if the fish you choose will stay small. However, lots of fish sold in pet stores get too big for a 10 gal tank.

The most important question you can ask is, “How big will this fish get?” The saying about a fish growing to the size of its tank isn’t entirely true. Small tanks can stunt the growth of fish meant to be large and that’s painful for them. : (

Thanks for talking about the fishes. I miss having them…

Maybe part of being a green fish owner is having smaller fish? I guess that might make sense, especially since you’re right, some fish are just too darn big for a small tank. You should get some more fish – put a lid on the tank to fight off Mr. kitty.
