Electric blankets dangerous for diabetics?

January 8, 2009 by Marijke Durning, RN

I’ve written before about a complications that is common among people with diabetes: peripheral neuropathy. This is an intense pain of the nerve endings. (Diabetic neuropathy) but what also happens is the affected area becomes less sensitive. Many people with diabetes have shared stories of how they had a sore on their foot but didn’t feel it until it became infected or quite large.

For this reason, electric blankets have often been frowned upon for people with diabetes. Although it’s rare, a blanket that is set too high may cause burns, especially if you can’t feel the heat.

If you do get a burn on your foot and you have diabetes, it’s essential that the burn be taken very seriously and treated right away. You don’t want to wait or fool around with at-home remedies. Too many people with diabetes end up with to or foot amputations because of wounds that have gone bad.

Over at WebMD, As A Diabetes Specialist recommends that if you do want to use an electric blanket, to use it before you get into bed to warm it up and then turn it off.
