Elf ears!

Make Art Monday!
My wonderful daughter came home a few weekends ago to start the process of making elf ears for me for Halloween. Not just out the goodness of her heart…she’s actually doing an independent study through her college art department on mold making and casting. She has tons of experience working with resins, fiberglass, bondo, plasticine, latex, and other modeling materials, but she decided that she needed to put it all together and get some professional guidance. Looks right now like she’s heading towards special effects prop making as a career
Making the ears is actually going to be a five-step process, including multiple positive and negative molds. The upside of going through all the extra steps is that you can then crank them out in quantity once you’ve got the molds made. We only went through the first step when we were together. Dani mixed up the mold making powder, poured it around my ears (minus all of my earrings…oy!), and let it set up. The first trial hardened too quickly, the second hardened too slowly, although it did end up being a usable mold, and the third trial was just right!
It took the rest of the day to wash the vaseline out of my hair!

Dani’s next step will be to make a plaster mold of each of my ears!
